Dr. Akbay received her PhD degree from the Cancer Biology program at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. Her studies focused on understanding the development of Type I and Type II Endometrial Cancers using mouse models.
After receiving her PhD degree, Dr. Akbay began her postdoctoral fellowship focusing on studying the role of chronic inflammation in lung cancer development at the Dana-Farber Cancer institute in Boston, Massachusetts. She showed that oncogenes have additional effects other than cell intrinsic effects, and can potentially have critical roles in the escape of tumor cells from the immune surveillance.
In her independent laboratory at UT Southwestern, she continues to work on understanding the immune evasion mechanisms of lung tumors and developing counter strategies to overcome immune resistance. The overarching goal of her laboratory is to develop novel treatment strategies that utilize host defense mechanisms in the treatment of lung and other cancers.
