Cancer impacts the length and quality of life of people all over the world. Throughout my career, I have been fascinated by these diseases from a biological standpoint, and also from the clinical perspective. As a student of Prof. Tapas K. Kundu (former trainee of Dr. Robert G. Roeder, Rockefeller University) at the Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research in Bangalore, India, I saw first hand the devastating effects of cancer, but also learned about the promise of cancer research to improve diagnosis and treatment. My graduate training helped stimulate my interest in cancer research. My thesis work focused on understanding how an oncogene termed “NPM1” (nucleophosmin) influenced higher order chromatin organization and transcriptional regulation in cancer.
