The overall goal of my research is to improve cellular immunotherapies for the treatment of cancer. During my postdoctoral and internal medicine residency at Baylor College of Medicine, I acquired the skills necessary to design viral vectors to genetically manipulate cells for the generation of novel cancer treatments. I have generated several new chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) vectors to target novel molecules expressed by cancer cells. To enhance the expansion of CAR T cells (CARTc) in vivo, I have engineered strategies to force expression of the IL-7 receptor and secretion of growth cytokine IL-15. To improve the safety of CARTc, I incorporated a suicide gene, inducible caspase-9, which since has been used in clinical trials.
