The burden of cancer in Texas is great and will only increase in future years. The American Cancer Society (2012) estimated that there would be 110,470 new cancer diagnoses in Texas in 2011. Age is the primary risk factor for cancer; by the year 2018 it is estimated that 22.7% of Texas residents will be 55 years of age or older – the age group in which nearly 77% of all cancer cases are detected. Recent estimates of survivorship project that there will be nearly 19 million cancer survivors in the United States by 2020.
