This comprehensive training program provides for education at the pre- and postdoctoral levels and also at the undergraduate level. Predoctoral students will be trained in the Cancer Biology Discipline of the Integrated Biomedical Science (IBMS) Graduate Program and in the Radiological Sciences Graduate Program. Six Ph.D. and M.D./Ph.D. predoctoral students will participate in this training. Postdoctoral students including Ph.D. researchers as well as M.D. fellows will be trained by mentors in these two programs (Cancer Biology and Radiological Sciences) as well as in the three clinical fellowship programs that emphasize research: Adult Hematology-Oncology, Pediatric Oncology, and Urologic Oncology. Six postdoctoral fellows will be supported each year. Undergraduate students will be introduced to research in a summer program where they will have the opportunity to train with mentors affiliated with this program. The trainees will participate in didactic and research activities. The research training will be under the tutelage of 44 funded mentors. Faculty in this program possess a broad range of expertise in cancer research including genomics/proteomics, cell signaling and receptor biology, DNA repair, RNA biology, metastasis and tumor microenvironment, radiology and radiation therapy, pediatric oncology, drug discovery, and carcinogenesis and prevention. The curriculum stresses both basic and translational research to provide the broad background in oncology needed for today’s research. These experienced mentors will guide the trainees to develop and execute a research project and aid them in development of skills necessary for independent and productive careers in cancer research.
